Rally: Stand Up for Equality and Diversity

Rally at Mountain View Civic Center Plaza

Castro Street at Mercy Street

1:00-3:00pm Saturday, August 19, 2017

Even though the “March on Google” fizzled out, we will still be at the Mountain View Civic Center on Saturday. Join us!

Please share this announcement by word of mouth, social media, e-mail lists, etc., and feel free to add your own messaging.
In response to the planned right-wing “March on Google” this Saturday, August 19, Mountain View Voices for Peace and Justice, along with other organizations and individuals, will be holding a rally in Mountain View Civic Center Plaza to demonstrate our area’s support for the human rights principles of equality and diversity. The rally will take place from 1 pm to 3 pm on Saturday, August 19, 2017 at Mercy and Castro Streets in Mountain View.
* To continue the spirit of this past Sunday’s events in Civic Center Plaza, this will be an Open Mic rally in which all participants will be afforded the opportunity to speak, sing, or otherwise express themselves briefly.
* We are inviting groups to set up tables to afford rally attendees the opportunity to connect with ongoing efforts to make America better.
* Though I understand the desire to confront directly hateful right-wing demonstrators at their march/rally a couple of miles away, I personally urge people to resist that impulse. Minuscule groups of racist, sexist, homophobic, and otherwise intolerant demonstrators are able to magnify their message by instigating confrontations at such events. That’s their strategy. We can answer them with a large, positive presence downtown.
Note: Though I am Mountain View’s vice-mayor, this is NOT an official city event.

  1. I heard on the news this morning that the march against Google has been called off by its organizers. Is your rally still happening? I want to change our church promotional language if the rally is not happening.

    1. Everyone I’ve heard from wants to go ahead with our Stand Up for Equality and Diversity rally on Saturday, 1 pm at the Mountain View Civic Center, despite the postponement of the right-wing March on Google. Perhaps there will be a smaller turnout, but I think it’s important for us to continue to speak out collectively and organize on many fronts.

I know it’s risky to rely on cable news, but if you missed Donald Trump’s performance Tuesday, you need to hit replay.

The issue isn’t what are the limits of protected speech. It’s not about who threw the first punch.

The scary thing is that we have a President who fails to understand that white supremacy, anti-Semitism, anti-Muslimism, misogyny, homophobia, etc. are un-American. Secondarily, there are other national political leaders who distance themselves from Trump’s rhetoric but have made a Devil’s bargain with him to push forward their conservative agenda. They need to back up their criticism with substantive action.

Mountain View is a community that treasures diversity and struggles to promote equality. These human rights values are essential for our democracy, our culture, and our economy. Along with our neighbors, we are driving the national economy. When we stand up, it provides a beacon of hope for the nation.
